What is an audiologist?
An audiologist tests hearing and assesses the nature of hearing disorders. They provide non-medical management and rehabilitation of hearing loss and other communication disorders.
What does an audiologist do?
Audiologists perform many tasks including:
- reporting hearing assessment results
- providing rehabilitation services and counselling for hearing impaired families
- prescribing and fitting hearing aids
- conduct follow-up consultations after hearing aids have been fitted
- acting as consultants on industrial compensation claims for work-related hearing loss
- undertaking scientific research related to sound and hearing
- teaching the science of audiology
What pathways will enable me to become an audiologist?

Audiologists can further their careers in health through further education and training in areas including:
- medicine
- dental health and dentistry
- speech pathology
How can I gain employment as an audiologist?
To be employed as an audiologist you must complete a Bachelor Degree in Science (Human Communication Science), a 4 year course available through Curtin University, and a 2 year Masters Degree in Clinical Audiology, available through UWA.
To enrol in the Bachelor of Science (Human Communication) you must have completed Year 12 or equivalent and at least one TEE science subject.
Curtin’s Gunada Centre for Aboriginal Studies is available to provide personal, academic and social support and resources for Aboriginal students hoping to enrol in this course.
