What does a lab technician do?
Lab technician roles depend on your level of qualification. For example, with a Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement you can:
- package and transport samples
- inspect products and packaging
- assist lab technicians
With a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills you can:
- clean, maintain and set up equipment
- process and record data
- operate test equipment and instruments
- receive and prepare tissue samples
With a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques you can:
- clean, maintain and set up equipment
- collect, classify and preserve specimens
- perform diagnostic and other scientific test on specimens
- carry out blood sampling procedures
What pathways will enable me to work in laboratory services?

Note: some certificate courses may take longer through traineeships
What can I do with a career in pathology?
Depending on your level of qualification, you can undertake a variety of roles with a career in pathology. For example, with a Certificate III in Pathology, you can:
- collect specimens
- assist in laboratory procedures
- work as a pathologist’s assistant
With a Certificate IV in Pathology you can:
- receive and prepare samples
- perform advanced testing on specimens
- work as a pathology supervisor/team leader
How can I gain employment in laboratory services?
You can gain enrolment in Certificate courses through most VET and/or TAFE providers.
There are no enrolment requirements at Certificate II level. However, some prerequisites including Year 10 completion may be required for direct entry into Certificate III.
Entry into Certificate IV courses may require you to have completed Certificate III.
