Background – Aboriginal men's health and wellbeing
In 2007, the Office of Aboriginal Health convened the WA Aboriginal Health Promotion Conference where a concurrent "men’s business" session was held. The session highlighted real deficiencies in the way Aboriginal men’s health was being addressed in Western Australia.
By 2008, we started work around developing a new approach to Aboriginal men's health in Western Australia. Importantly the program would include a mechanism to engage with Aboriginal men and key stakeholders in the planning, designing and delivery of health programs and services to their intended target.
So far we have made some early investment in setting a platform for change for the betterment of Aboriginal men’s health and wellbeing in Western Australia. Activities include:
- Establishing an Aboriginal men’s health portfolio within WA Health
- Convening a statewide Aboriginal men’s health forum in Perth on 22 – 23 April 2008
- Establishing an Aboriginal men’s health reference group from 2009
- Implementing a Pit Stop training program for Aboriginal health workers across the state
- Developing a state Aboriginal men’s health and wellbeing implementation framework
