Programs - Environmental Health Program in WA

There are serious and widespread environmental health problems facing the Aboriginal population. These include inadequate and poorly maintained housing, lack of suitable sewerage facilities, inadequate and poor quality water supplies and a lack of other basic services such as power, drainage and roads.

Until these conditions are rectified Aboriginal health standards will remain poor and the rates of infectious diseases including gastroenteritis, skin diseases, chronic ear infections, trachoma and chest infections will remain high.

In 1995 the Office of Aboriginal Health (OAH) identified environmental health as a high priority area and organised an ‘Aboriginal Environmental Health Survey’ to determine the scale of the problem and to direct a priority, needs based program. This survey was again carried out in 2004, the survey and it’s findings have been published.
